Both Cross Teams Take 2nd in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Eight days away from hosting the GLIAC Championships at the Tech Trails, the Michigan Tech cross country teams took part in the U.P. Championship race in Marquette today. Both Huskies teams finished second of three teams at the event.

The women scored 54 points to finish behind Northern Michigan (15) and ahead of Lake Superior State (72). Sonja Hedblom was the top Husky on the four-kilometer course with a time of 15:44.5 that was good for eight place. Carolyn Lucca (13th) also finished under 16 minutes with a 15:59.

Alice Flanders and Noelle Savage were four tenths apart in 14th and 15th, respectively, at 16:09. Makenna Stepflug rounded out the team score with a 16:30 and 22nd place showing.

The men tallied a team score of 33 points, which was just 11 back of Lake Superior State and well ahead of Gogebic (84). The course for the men's race was five kilometers.

Daniel Kulas was the leader for Tech, finishing third in a time of 16:31. Alex Bolthouse was 11 seconds and two spots back at 16:42.

Ethan Norstog and Matt Dugan took seventh and eighth places with times of 16:53 and 16:57, respectively. Chad Pollock was the fifth Husky in the top 10 with a 17:11 clocking.

"We held back some of our top runners to get them good and rested for the GLIAC meet next weekend," said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. "That said, we finished about where I thought we would. I was happy to see several of our athletes run PRs for four and five kilometers."

Michigan Tech's next event will be the GLIAC Championships in Houghton next Saturday (Oct. 26). The Huskies haven't hosted the league meet since 2000.
