Huskies defeat Parkside at SDC Gym

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech handed Parkside a 3-1 loss Friday at the SDC Gym. The Huskies won 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, and 25-19 to improve to 18-9 overall and 10-7 in the GLIAC

"I'm happy we won," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "It was for the most part a good match. I thought we laid up in the second set, but ultimately we got quality play from a number of players and won the match."

The Huskies used a 13-4 run in the first set to take a commanding 23-14 lead. The Rangers fought back late but a kill by Meg Raabe made it setpoint and an attacking error by the visitors put the Huskies up 1-0. Raabe had six kills in the first.

Parkside (9-19, 3-14 GLIAC) went on an 8-0 run late in the second set to take a four-point lead at 22-18. Tech came back to get within one at 23-22, but the visitors evened the match with a kill by Reese Rossnagel and a service error by Tech. Jillian Kuizenga led the Huskies with five kills in the second.

The teams battled through six ties in the third before the Huskies went on an 8-2 run to take a 21-13 lead. Makena Wesol put down the final two points for the home team to put the Black and Gold back on top. Meg Raabe and Wesol combined for 12 kills.

The Rangers built a five-point lead early in the fourth but the Huskies closed the gap. Trailing 18-16, the Huskies went on a tear, scoring nine of the final 10 points, including a 6-0 run to seal the victory. Meg Raabe stayed hot with five kills in the fourth.

Meg Raabe tied a season-high with 22 kills while hitting .360 and adding 13 digs. Jillian Kuizenga and Makena Wesol each added 11 kills. Lina Espejo-Ramirez registered 47 assists and 13 digs. Carissa Beyer (15) and Grace Novotny (10) were also in double figures defensively.

The Huskies wrap up the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday against Purdue Northwest on Senior Day. The Pride fell 3-0 Friday at Northern Michigan. 

"Senior Day is always a special one," added Jennings. "We'll make sure we do our best to honor them with good play. We have a group of seven seniors that we will miss dearly. It's a group that is going to go off and do some amazing things. Tomorrow is their day."

Carissa Beyer, Lina Espejo-Ramirez, Janie Grindland, Jillian Kuizenga, Grace Novotny, Maggie Petersen, and Morgan Radtke will be honored after the match on Saturday.
