Huskies sweep Cardinals for sixth straight win

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team won its sixth straight match and picked up its ninth sweep of the season Saturday (Oct. 2) over Saginaw Valley State at the SDC Gym. The Huskies dominated 25-13, 25-10, and 25-17 to improve to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC

"I think we did a good job getting them out of their system right away," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "They've had a good start to their season and went five at NMU last night, so we knew it was important to have a good start."

Senior outside hitter Anna Jonynas notched her 1,000th career kill in the first set to become the only player in program history to tally 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She was the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week and had a match-high 16 kills, including nine in the first set alone.

Laura De Marchi weighed in on the accomplishment, "Anna is the most underrated player I've ever seen. People don't give her as much credit as she deserves. She is an amazing player in the front row, back row, on the court, and off the court. She's so consistent, and I'm so happy she got this milestone."

Tech never trailed in the first after jumping out to a 4-0 lead and closing the set by scoring the final seven points. Carissa Beyer had 10 digs in the first set, while Lindy Oujiri and Kaycee Meiners teamed up on a block for the final point.

The Huskies carried the momentum into the second and held an early 12-3 lead. Eight different players in the Black and Gold had a kill in the second with Lauren Richards putting down the final point for the 25-10 win and 2-0 lead at the break.

Tech led 7-1 early in the third and continued the dominance with a 25-17 win and sweep of the Cardinals. Jonynas and Morgan Radtke each had four kills in the final frame and the Huskies had three blocks, limiting SVSU to a -.06 hitting percentage.

Laura De Marchi tallied 37 assists and 11 digs. Oujiri (9), Radtke (7), Kuizenga (6), and Meiniers (5) all added at least five kills. Beyer finished with 20 digs and Megan Utlak added seven digs.

"We're gaining some momentum and we're going to ride on it," added De Marchi. "We have a goal for the end of the season and every single game we add a brick on it to build towards that goal."

The Huskies play a single match next week when they host Northern Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 9) at the SDC Gym.
