Volleyball falls to Concordia-St. Paul Saturday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Saturday (Sept. 4) at the SDC Gym. The Golden Bears won 25-17, 25-20, and 25-23.

The match was the finale of the Keweenaw Classic where Tech hosted 16 matches across three days at the Student Development Complex.

"It's disappointing," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Concordia is one of the best teams in the country every year, and we knew we were going to have our hands full. That wasn't our best performance and you have to credit them. I know we were a bit shorthanded but the team rallied around Lina."

Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 13 kills and finished the weekend with a 3.25 kills per set average. She had seven kills in the third set when the Huskies were fighting to stay alive. Lindy Oujiri finished with five kills with all of them coming in the final frame.

Lina Espejo-Ramirez stepped into the setting role today and tallied a career-high 27 assists. Carissa Beyer (12 digs) and Jonynas (11 digs) led the backcourt defensively.

"It's been some time since we've dropped three like this," added Jennings. "Last night was a battle, and I wish we could have the afternoon match back, but we only have one choice and that is to look up and find ways to get better."

The Huskies hit the road next weekend to the Illinois Springfield tournament where they will face McKendree and No. 17 Northwest Missouri State on Friday (Sept. 10) and Lake Erie and Illinois Springfield on Saturday (Sept. 11).
