Volleyball wraps up home schedule with 3-1 win over Northwood

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 20-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated Northwood 3-1 Saturday (Nov. 9) at the SDC Gym. The Timberwolves won the first set 29-27 before the Huskies took the final three 25-20, 25-9, and 25-19.
"Every match at this point in the season is important for us," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "They snuck up on us in the first set, but we responded well after that. It was very important to come up with the win after an emotional loss last night and on senior day today. I'm glad we pulled it out."
Tech led by as many as eight in the first set before the Timberwolves stormed back and eventually won 29-27. Olivia Ghormley had six kills, and Megan Utlak and Anna Jonynas dug up seven balls.
The Huskies responded with a 25-20 win in set two using a balanced attack and only allowing nine kills by Northwood.
The Black and Gold dominated the third 25-9, jumping out to a 10-3 lead and then closing on a 10-0 run. Ghormley tallied seven kills and the defense forced 10 attack errors by the visitors.
There were five ties in the fourth set before the Huskies went on an 8-1 run to take an 18-11 lead. MacAulay Petersen had pair of kills down the stretch and Tech picked up its 20th win of the season with a 25-19 win in set four.
Ghormley finished with a match-high 24 kills—her seventh 20-kill match of the season. She also added 10 digs and a pair of block assists.
Laura De Marchi set the attack with 36 assists and 12 digs through the first two and a half sets. Megan Utlak piled up 24 digs and Anna Jonynas added 21.
Kristine Fink, Courtney Kurkie, Rachel Ping, and Emilia Widen were honored before the match on Senior Day.
"We love this senior class," added Jennings. "This group has done so much for us. The two middles have started for us the last two seasons, and they've come a long way since freshman year. Courtney has played a variety of roles for us over her five years, and she's been a quality senior leader. Kristine is as positive and relentless as they come. She's the best teammate anyone could have. We're going to miss this crew very much, but we're going to keep the season going as long as we can to keep this group together."
The Huskies will wrap up the regular season next weekend at Lake Superior State Friday and Saginaw Valley State Saturday before playoffs begin.
