Volleyball wins sixth straight with sweep of LSSU Saturday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team completed the perfect week with three straight sweeps as the Huskies took down Lake Superior State Saturday (Sept. 28) afternoon at the SDC Gym. Olivia Ghormley notched her 1,000 career kills in the match and the Black and Gold won its sixth straight match.
"I'm really happy with the week," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Lake State was coming off a big win last night, so we knew we would have our hands full. I thought they really pressed us in that first set.
"I told the team I was happy with the way we got better as the match went on. Our offense started clicking and our ball control started to clean up. Once that happens, we're a hard team to beat."
Ghormley finished with a match-high 16 kills to put her at exactly 1,000 for her career. She notched the point late in the third set for a 22-14 lead.
"She's a great player and great teammate," added Jennings. "She's worked so hard for everything she's got. She doesn't want any of the attention, but we'll give it to her. To have 1,000 kills not even halfway through her junior year speaks to the kind of player she is."
"I have to credit my teammates," Ghormley said. "I've been able to carry a lot of confidence over from last season and that's been big. We all worked hard and improved in the offseason and it shows with individual achievements."
The two teams battled to 10 ties in a long first set. The Lakers led by as many as four before the Huskies battled back to tie it at 14. The Huskies closed the set scoring seven of the final nine points for the 25-20 win with three kills by MacAulay Petersen and one by Emilia Widen in the later stages.
Tech built leads of 13-8 and 21-8 in the second set and cruised to a 25-12 win. Ghormley had five kills in the frame and the team hit .303 while holding LSSU to .062.
The Huskies built a lead in the third and closed it out with kills by Petersen, Anna Jonynas, and a service ace by Janie Grindland.
Petersen also hit double digits with 11 kills on only 20 attempts. Laura De Marchi tallied 41 assists, eight digs, and four blocks. Jonynas (16), Megan Utlak (12), and Ghormley (11) all tallied over 10 digs.
The Huskies sit atop of the GLIAC North Division standings with a 5-0 record and 10-3 overall mark. They will head back on the road next weekend for matches at Northwood and Ferris State.
