Olivia Ghormley and Laura DeMarchi Named AVCA All-Americans

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Michigan Tech volleyball standouts Olivia Ghormley and Laura DeMarchi have been named All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Tuesday.

Ghormley, selected to the Third Team, becomes the fifth player to be named All-American in program history and the first since Marisol Mosquera was named First Team in 1997. Meanwhile, with an Honorable Mention selection, DeMarchi becomes the first Husky since Jen Jung in 2008 to be named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention.

A sophomore outside hitter from Oneida, Wisconsin who was named AVCA All-Midwest Region, Ghormley led the conference in kills (518) and kills per set (4.58) while ranking first in both categories in the Midwest Region and sixth in Division II in kills per set as she was named GLIAC Attacker of the Year, D2CCA All-Region Second Team, and All-GLIAC First Team. Ghormley's 518 kills were the fifth-most in a single season in program history, and her 4.58 kills per set was the fourth-most in one season in Michigan Tech history. A three-time GLIAC North Division Player of the Week in 2018, Ghormley is currently 185 kills shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to record 1,000 kills in a career.

"This was truly a monumental season for Olivia," head coach Matt Jennings says of his outside hitter. "Her offensive performance was among the best in program history. She was inspiring to watch play and a real source of joy for her teammates all year long."

DeMarchi, an AVCA All-Midwest Region honoree from Milan, Italy, was named GLIAC Setter of the Year for the second year in a row after tallying 1,254 assists with an average of 11.72 assist per set to rank her first in the GLIAC in assists per set and second in the conference in total assists. DeMarchi's assist per set figures placed her eighth in the Midwest Region and 12th in the country as she also picked up All-GLIAC First Team and D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team plaudits in 2018. DeMarchi's assist total ties with Kristin Klock in 2000 for the fifth-most assists in a single season in Tech history. A Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week selection in October, DeMarchi needs just 536 assists to become the fourth player in Michigan Tech history to record 3,000 assists in a career.

"Laura is one of the best competitors I've had the pleasure to coach," says Jennings of his sophomore setter. "Her drive to win has been a major factor in any success we've had these last two seasons with her running our offense. She has a great understanding of the game and her setting decisions consistently put our hitters in a position to score."
