MTU Volleyball Releases 2018 Schedule

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Head Coach Matt Jennings and the Michigan Tech volleyball program are pleased to announce the 2018 schedule. This year's calendar will feature two preseason tournaments which include a trip to Anchorage, Alaska for the Alaska Tournament and the NMU Wildcat Invite in Marquette, Mich. The Huskies lineup includes seven home matches with the first scheduled match at the SDC Friday, Sept. 14 against the Northwood Timberwolves.

The Huskies will have an opportunity to begin their season with new, non-conference competition at the Alaska Tournament. Competition is set to begin Friday, Aug. 24 against Barton College out of the Carolinas Conference, followed by Alaska Fairbanks of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), Western New Mexico of the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and Alaska Anchorage (GNAC). 

Shortly after Tech returns from Alaska, they will be on the road to Marquette to dive into competition at the NMU Wildcat Invite. The tournament features four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) universities; Minnesota – Crookston (Aug. 31), Bemidji State (Aug. 31), St. Cloud State (Sept. 1) and #4 Minnesota – Duluth. 

To kickstart GLIAC play, the Huskies travel to Saginaw Valley State (Sept. 7) for a 7:00 PM match up followed by Lake Superior State on (Sept. 8). Tech will travel to Marquette, Mich. Tuesday, Sept. 11 to compete with rival Northern Michigan. 

The Huskies first of seven home matches will be held in the SDC Varsity Gym Friday, Sept. 14 against the Northwood Timberwolves. GLIAC play will continue with three home matches versus Ferris State (Sept. 15), Davenport (Sept. 16) and Grand Valley State (Sept. 22). 

MTU will spend the next three weekends on the road. The competition includes the newest member of the GLIAC, UW-Parkside (Oct. 6) and the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament held in Indianapolis, Indiana (Oct. 12-13). The tournament will include three matches versus regional opponents of the Greater Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) over a two-day period. The schedule will be released a week prior to the event. 

The Huskies close out conference play with three home games featuring Lake Superior State (Oct. 19), Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 20) and Northern Michigan (Sat. 27) and two final road games, Ferris State (Nov. 2) and Northwood (Nov. 3) before the GLIAC Tournament commences.

The Huskies wrapped up the 2017 season with a GLIAC quarterfinal win over Tiffin, a semifinal win over Northern Michigan and an NCAA Appearance. Matt Jennings was named GLIAC Coach of the Year and Laura DeMarchi was named GLIAC Freshman and Setter of the Year. DeMarchi also earned All-GLIAC First Team Honors along with teammate Mariah ShermanMacAulay Petersen was All-GLIAC Second Team and Elle Heinonen was Honorable Mention. Seven Huskies were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team and two were named GLIAC All-Academic. There is 11 returning athletes on the roster with the addition of four freshman.
