Huskies Sweep Davenport 3-0 Friday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Huskies swept Davenport Friday at the SDC Gym in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The Huskies were victorious in all three sets, winning 25-17, 25-10 and 25-11. Sophomore, MacAulay Petersen led with 12 kills and the team recorded an impressive attack percentage of .408 versus the Panther's 0.50.

The Black and Gold jumped off in set one pounding 16 total kills. Stephanie Dietrich and Mariah Sherman stopped the DU offense with a winning block, leading to set one's 25-17 triumph. Tech held a steady drive in set two, picking up four blocks – one being a solo block by Dietrich. Tech's tempo carried into the third set; Courtney Kurkie stepped in and recorded an ace and a solid kill from Olivia Ghormley shut down the Panthers 25-11.

"I'm happy to get back in the win column back and back in GLIAC play," said Michigan Tech Head Coach Matt Jennings. "This was a step forward, a good game, and I thought it was a decisive win. Being back on your home court is always a nice thing and I was just really happy with the way we played in general."

MTU outblocked the Panthers 7-2 while accumulating 52 digs and five service aces.

Petersen led the offense, hitting at .462 while recording 12 kills. Sherman tallied 11 at a .440 attack percentage. Middle-blocker, Dietrich, added eight kills and four blocks. Freshmen, Olivia Ghormley, had seven kills and a block and senior, Lauren Emmert, pounded five kills and contributed two blocks and four digs.

"Mac and Mariah, particularly at each pin were scoring at will," Jennings said. "I don't think they made any hitting errors. Stephanie, did a really good job in the middle. Lauren was steady as always and Liv came up with some big swings for us when we needed them."

Three Huskies chipped in double-figure digs; Elle Heinonen (11), Anna Jonynas (10), and Laura DeMarchi (11). DeMarchi set Tech's offense with 39 assists and one kill. Mariel Leibovitz took over the offense in the third set and recorded a block.

"I thought Laura did a good job of setting the ball around, distributing it equally and getting it to the hot hitters when we needed it most."

Michigan Tech has now climbed to a 7-3 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Huskies host Purdue Northwest Saturday, Oct. 21. The first serve is set for 4 p.m.
