Huskies Volleyball Falls to No. 7 Ranked Ferris State Friday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Huskies played three tight sets versus the No. 7 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday Night inside FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena but fell 3-0 in their first GLIAC road match of the season.

The Huskies matched up evenly for a hard-fought battle in sets one and three; recording more kills and digs than Ferris in the first set. Set three saw seven lead changes but ultimately, the Bulldogs prevailed on their four-match winning streak, sweeping the Huskies 26-24, 25-15 and 26-24. 

"Another close one tonight," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. "I'm disappointed it didn't go our way. They are a really good team we lost to and they're particularly tough to beat at home."

"In sets one and three, we fought hard battles that were pretty well played by both sides. However, there comes a point where we have to get over playing close with these good teams and play to win. We made too many errors at critical points in those close sets." 

MacAulay Petersen and Mariah Sherman led the Huskies' offense with double-figure kills. Petersen notched a match high of 13 kills to carry the offense and Sherman pounded 12 kills while hitting at .556. 

"Mariah had another great match for us and along with Mac," Jennings added. "They really carried our offense for most of the match. Laura did a good job spreading the ball around and gave our attackers pretty good opportunities to score."

Laura DeMarchi set the offense with 30 assists while adding 12 digs. Elle Heinonen recorded 11 digs, and Anna Jonynas finished with 11 digs and three kills.

The Huskies wrap-up the weekend at Northwood Saturday for another road match of GLIAC play. The Timberwolves were swept by Northern Michigan on Friday to move into fifth place overall in the GLIAC North Division. Tech is 7-5 overall and is now 2-2 in the GLIAC.

"We'll stay positive because it wasn't a bad performance," said Jennings. "We competed and played hard. But we have to toughen up a bit and dig in. We've got to fight the whole match. We've got another chance tomorrow to do just that."

Serve time is set for 2 p.m. inside the Riepma Arena.
