Pohlod Receives GLIAC Commissioner’s Award

BAY CITY, Mich. Michigan Tech volleyball player Rachel Pohlod was one of the six female recipients of the 2016 Fall GLIAC Commissioner's Award the league announced on Friday (Feb. 17). Six male and six female student-athletes that excel academically and on the fields of play are presented after the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons with the award.

Pohlod is a senior setter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is one of only three players in Tech history to record over 2,000 assists and 1,000 digs in her career. Pohlod was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection and All-GLIAC First Team pick in 2016 after career highs in assists (1,238), digs (361), blocks (27), assists in a match (68), and digs in a match (27)​.

Pohlod was a three-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, holding a 3.99 grade-point average in mechanical engineering. She was also a GLIAC Honorable Mention choice in 2015 and team Co-MVP in 2016.

Pohlod's 1,238 assists in 2016 rank second in a single season in Tech history and were 16th in the nation. Her 3,107 career assists and 1,223 career digs both rank fourth in Tech history. She averaged 3.02 digs per set in her career—eighth in school history. Pohlod ranked first in the GLIAC in assists per set and fourth in aces per set, leading all GLIAC setters in assists per set, digs per set, and aces this season. She was also a team co-captain and had 21 matches with double-digit assists and digs and 12 matches with over 45 assists.

The five other female student-athletes who received the Commissioner's Awards were Clare Carlson of Grand Valley State, Alli Cudworth of Ashland, Kendra Foley of GVSU, Gabriella Mencotti of GVSU, and Hannah Tong of Findlay.

The six male student-athletes who received the award were Trent Brodbeck of Wayne State, Michael Fisher of Northwood, Morgan Loyd of Tiffin, Chris May of GVSU, James Ngandu of Tiffin, and Adam Shaheen of Ashland.
