HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball swept Lake Superior State 3-0 Saturday (Nov. 12) afternoon at the SDC Gym to finish the regular season. The Huskies won 25-18, 25-11, and 25-15 on Senior Day.

Tech is 16-14 overall and finished 11-6 in conference play to position itself as the No. 5 seed in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies will play No. 4 seeded Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday (Nov. 16) in University Center.

"It's always emotional on Senior Day and it was nice to get a win for them," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Our offense was going and our service came back to life."

Seniors Aubrey Ficek and Rachel Pohlod were recognized before the match. The duo has played starting roles all four seasons, leading the Huskies to the program's best start in 2015 with a 10-0 start. This season they led Tech to its second straight GLIAC Tournament.

"Those two seniors have meant a lot to this program," added Jennings. "They've set quite a standard for future Michigan Tech volleyball players as athletes and students. We're for sure going to miss them, but we're not done playing yet."

The Black and Gold didn't get much resistance from the LSSU through the first two sets. With the scored tied at 11 in the third, Tech scored 14 of the final 18 points to secure victory. Stephanie Dietrich and Mariah Sherman each had three kills down the stretch.

Ficek led a balanced attack with a match-high 11 kills while adding seven digs. Lauren Emmert and Dietrich added eight kills each while MacAulay Petersen tallied seven.

Rachel Pohlod had 37 assists, 11 digs and five kills. Elle Heinonen led the back row with 17 digs.

First serve is set for 7 p.m. between the Huskies and Cardinals. The two teams split on the year with Tech winning 3-0 on September 17 downstate and SVSU taking a 3-1 win on November 11 at the SDC. The Cardinals lost 3-1 at Northern Michigan Saturday in the season finale.
