Volleyball Earns 3-1 Win over Northwood

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech snapped a five-match skid by defeating Northwood in GLIAC volleyball tonight at the SDC Gym. The Huskies dropped the first set but rallied to take the next three and earn its seventh GLIAC win of the campaign.

"It feels good to get the win," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. "It's the monkey off the back so to speak. We took some pressure off ourselves and were playing for pride and to get some momentum as we wrap up our season this weekend."

The Timberwolves out-hit the Huskies .206-to-.053 in the opening set to claim a 25-21 victory. The score was 22-21 before the visitors scored three straight to put it away.

Tech bounced back nicely in the second. Despite a 4-0 deficit to open the frame, the Huskies built a lead 17-12 then finished it off with a Stephanie Dietrich kill for a 25-19 final.

Set three was even more decisive for the Black and Gold as they cruised to a 25-17 victory. Noelle Eveland had five kills in the set, and Aubrey Ficek finished it off with a service ace.

Northwood scored six straight points in the fourth set to gain a set point at 24-23. Tech fought it off, then used a Dietrich kill and NU error to close out the match 26-24.

Tech hit .247 over the final three sets compared to .140 for the Timberwolves. Kendall Ward finished with a match-high 15 kills from the outside.

"Our outside hitters played well tonight," said Jennings. "Kendall's starting to play the way she's capable, and when she's pounding the ball it's contagious for the rest of the team."

Jacqueline Aird posted 25 digs to lead all players. Rosie Aumann did not start, but came in and recorded a match-high 33 assists.

Michigan Tech (10-16 overall, 7-10 GLIAC) will wrap up its 2014 volleyball season tomorrow with a 4 p.m. match vs. Lake Superior State.
