HOUGHTON, Mich. — Saginaw Valley State defeated Michigan Tech 3-0 in GLIAC volleyball tonight at the SDC Gym. Set scores were 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
SVSU used several small runs to turn a 10-all score into a 20-12 lead in the first set. The Huskies battled back within 22-17 on a pair of Kendall Ward kills, but the Cardinals scored three straight to close out the set 25-17.
Set two saw the Huskies take a 9-4 lead early, but the Cardinals came back to grab a 22-19 advantage. A Sylvie Rokosh kill and Jacqueline Aird ace pulled the Huskies within 22-21 before the visitors closed out the set decisively.
Tech battled back from down 22-19 in the third set to make it 23-22 on Aubrey Ficek's kill. The Huskies were a point away from forcing set three to extend but finally fell 25-23.
"It's disappointing. We played hard, but our defense really had a hard time stopping their middle attack," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. "Credit Saginaw. They were scrappy and played well."
Lauren Emmert finished with a team-high nine kills for the Black and Gold. Ward and Rokosh added eight and seven, respectively. Rachel Pohlod notched 31 assists. Halie Hart posted a team-high 12 digs.
Saginaw Valley State (15-8 overall, 11-4 GLIAC) posted a .291 hitting percentage compared to the Huskies .141.
Michigan Tech (9-15, 6-9 GLIAC) will return home for its third consecutive match at the SDC Gym on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 3 p.m. vs. Wayne State.
