Huskies Fall 3-1 at NMU Tuesday

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-1 at Northern Michigan on Tuesday (Sept. 23) night at Vandament Arena. The Huskies won the third set 26-24 but fell 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21 in the other three. Tech is now 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the GLIAC.

Down 2-0 and 21-17 in the third set, the Huskies went on a run to knot it up at 23. A Tech service error gave NMU a set point, but back-to-back kills by Lauren Emmert and Rachel Pohlod put the visitors up. Northern had an attack error to give the Huskies a 26-24 win.

Tech jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the fourth, before NMU battled back to tie it up at 18. A pair of kills by Kendall Ward had the Huskies down one (21-20) but Anna Aycock finished the match for the Wildcats with a pair of kills.

"I don't know if we played better in the third or fourth," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Both teams went on runs at the right times, and that's how we've played against each other in our preseason scrimmages."

Madison Whitehead got NMU off to a good start with nine kills in the first two sets. The home team hit .229 in the first, winning 25-20. Northern had nine more kills (18-9) than the Huskies in the second and won 25-23.

"The 2-0 deficit put us in a hole that at the end of the day we just couldn't get out of," added Jennings. "We didn't execute down the stretch, and they made some key adjustments to our attack."

Emmert led the Huskies with 14 kills. Stephanie Dietrich added nine while Ward had eight. Pohlod had 38 assists out of the setter position. Jacqueline Aird led a group of five Huskies who had double-digit digs with 24.

NMU is 5-5 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC. Whitehead led four Wildcats who had double-digit kills with 17. Meghan Seymour set up the Northern attack with 37 assists while Alex Berger and Lisa Studnicka had 20 digs.

The two teams meet again on October 28 in Houghton. The Huskies return to the SDC Gym this weekend for a pair of matches against GLIAC South Division opponents. Tech hosts Findlay on Friday (Sept. 26) and Hillsdale on Saturday (Sept. 27).
