Women’s Tennis sweeps final home weekend
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team swept its final home weekend. The Huskies defeated Davenport 5-2 on Friday and Purdue Northwest 4-3 on Saturday at Gates Tennis Center.
On the men's side, the Panthers won 5-2 and the Pride defeated the Huskies 6-1.
"The women really came in clutch this weekend," Tech coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep said. "They all knew that the possibility of the postseason was on the line, and we produced the best tennis we've played in conference so far.
"The men had a tough weekend. We were hoping for some big things and fell short of that. All we can do is look forward, keep trucking along, and try to finish conference play strong next weekend."
Emily Cojocaru and Chiara Heinz both went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. Cojocaru teamed up with Caoimhe McDonnell to win both of their doubles matches in the No. 1 position. Cojocaru also took both of her singles matches in the top spot—coming back from a 1-0 deficit on Saturday. She won 6-2, 6-1 on Friday and 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday.
Heinz and Emily Rose won both of their doubles contests at No. 3. Heinz was dominant in No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-4 win Friday and a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Saturday.
Emily Rose came back for a three-set win (0-6, 6-4, 6-4) at No. 4 singles on Friday, and Marina Fernandez won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
On Saturday, Marina Fernandez and Katerina Khardina won their No. 2 doubles match to sweep the point for the Huskies. Fernandez went 2-0 on her Senior Day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, finishing the weekend 3-1 in her contests.
Vitor Jordao and Nikolai Prosjanykov went undefeated on the weekend in doubles.
In singles on Friday, Eli Pinnoo earned a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot and Landon Coates added a point for the Huskies in the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-2.
The Huskies honored their seniors Artem Sharkota, Eli Pinnoo, Nikolai Prosjanykov, Ricardo Nunez, Grace Eland, and Marina Fernandez on Saturday.
The women's team is 4-13 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC and the men's squad is 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC. The Huskies wrap up the regular season at Ferris State on Friday and Grand Valley State on Saturday.
