#45 Huskies clip Cards 4-3 for fourth straight win

MIDLAND, Mich. - The middle of the singles lineup shined in No. 45 Michigan Tech's fourth straight win 4-3 Friday afternoon against Saginaw Valley State at Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Huskies remained undefeated (4-0) in GLIAC matches after edging their third straight opponent by a 4-3 score.

SVSU won the team doubles point and pushed Tech to a trio of three-set singles matches, but the Huskies improved to 4-1 on the road (7-4 overall). Grace Eland rebounded to down Tara Erier after taking a tight second-set tiebreaker 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2 in the clinching match. Ewa Podulka also prevailed after going the distance against Johanna Michahelles 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. 

At No. 4, Emily Cojocaru defeated Amelia Dickson 6-1, 6-4 while Marina Fernandez downed Calli Sokolowski 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.

"Saginaw Valley State showed they are a much-improved team this year," said head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "But we keep showing how tough we can be in matches. I am very happy with the win."

The Cardinals (6-9, 1-4) brought momentum into the match after a 6-1 win Sunday over Ferris State. Adriana Barrio earned a decisive win over [#71] Dominika Bobik 6-0, 6-0. at No. 1 singles. Barrio and Erier also teamed to win at No. 1 doubles 6-4 over Bobik and Eland. Dickson and Michalhelles won a set tiebreaker 7-4 at No. 2 doubles over Cojocaru and Lauren Opalewski.

The Huskies host No. 13 Wayne State on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at Gates Tennis Center. MTU has three regular season matches remaining until the GLIAC quarterfinals on April 21. They are currently alone in first place in the conference standings, though No. 24 ranked Grand Valley State (2-0) is still unbeaten.
