Huskies outmaneuvered by Timberwolves

MIDLAND, Mich. - Road struggles continued for Michigan Tech women's tennis Friday as the Huskies fell 6-1 to Northwood University in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Lauren Opalewski was the lone singles winner for Tech and the Timberwolves swept doubles to improve to 11-5, 4-0 GLIAC. MTU fell to 1-7, 1-3 GLIAC with the defeat.

"Today wasn't the best day for our team," commented head coach Kristin Yep. "We played into Northwood's strategy too much and we were not proactive in creating opportunities for ourselves to win points. We will have another chance to improve tomorrow against Wayne State."

Opalewski's victory came at No. 4 singles in straight sets over Sanvi Ahluwalia 6-0, 6-4. Opalewski is 1-2 at the No. 4 lineup position this spring. With Nicole Ballach still out, Dominika Bobik appeared at No. 1 singles for the second straight match and fell 6-2, 7-5 to Elizaveta Velichko. Velichko is 7-5 at No. 1 this season for the Timberwolves.

Senior Ivona Gorgioski took the first set against Rafaella Fulop but succumbed 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The Huskies fell in straight sets in the remaining singles positions. Opalewski was the last to finish.

Michigan Tech travels to Wayne State (9-6, 4-0) Saturday at 3 p.m. Tech has played just one home match so far this season.
