Huskies defeat Cardinals 6-1

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech women's tennis defeated Saginaw Valley State University 6-1 at Gates Tennis Center Sunday for their first conference win of the season. The Huskies took all three doubles sets, then carried momentum into five singles victories to improve to 1-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC.

"We played well and it was great to get a win in our first home match of the season," said head coach Kristin Yep. "The team went out there and took care of business today."

Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski teamed for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Nicole Johnson and Sara Neves (SVSU). Bobik did not drop a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 1 singles over Neves.

Ivona Gorgioski bested Emma Charleton (SVSU) at No. 2 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and Neva Manas dropped just two games against Joanne Gao 6-2, 6-0. Marina Fernandez and Chiara Heinz also earned straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.

The Huskies continue with conference play at Northwood University on Friday, April 8. The Cardinals (5-8, 0-4 GLIAC) hosts Davenport next.
