PREVIEW: Women's Tennis sends faction to Indianapolis

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Two members of the Michigan Tech women's tennis team will compete at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament this weekend in Indianapolis beginning Saturday and running through Monday. The event features individual player competition in singles and doubles with a seeded bracket including players from each institution in the region.

This year, the Huskies are represented by junior Lauren Opalewski (Oxford, Michigan) and graduate student transfer Nicole Ballach (Waldbroel, Germany). The duo will appear separately in the A singles draw and also team up for doubles. Opalewski comes in with 24 career doubles wins and finished the spring season 6-8 in singles, playing at No. 2 in the lineup. Opalewski is also a 2020-21 ITA Scholar Athlete.

Ballach joined the Huskies from Hawai'i Pacific University, where she finished 6-2 in singles last season and went 7-5 in doubles. She is making her first ITA tournament appearance.

Michigan Tech last competed in the ITA tournament in 2019-20. Ivona Gorgioski won her first two matches to make the round of 16. Dominika Bobik also made the second round.

The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. Regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships hosted in Rome, Georgia.
