Huskies Fall at Hillsdale 4-3 Sunday

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team resumed the 2019-20 season on Sunday, falling in a non-conference match at Hillsdale College 4-3. The Huskies competed in their first match since the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on October 27 when they defeated Northwood 4-0 in the third-place game. Tech is ranked seventh in the ITA NCAA Division II Midwest Region Poll that was announced on January 16.

Michigan Tech (9-4) began the match strong with a point in the doubles portion of Sunday's showdown at Hillsdale (5-0). Junior Ivona Gorgioski and sophomore Jessica Brown teamed up in No. 1 doubles to defeat Hannah Cimpeanu and Sarah Hackman 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker.

That proved to be the deciding point for the Huskies after the Chargers secured the first doubles match in the No. 3 spot. Freshmen Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski evened the doubles competition in the No. 2 spot with a 7-5 victory over Katie Bell and Ellie Chawner Sunday afternoon before the deciding contest in No. 1 doubles.

Unfortunately, the Chargers claimed victories in four of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory. Bobik picked up one of Tech's singles wins with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Hackman in the No. 2 spot in the lineup to go to 12-1 on the year in singles competition. Freshman Neva Manas logged the other win in No. 5 singles, edging out Canela Luna 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 to improve to 10-6. The Chargers earned their points in the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 spots in the lineup.

The Huskies will be back on the court at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina March 6-14 and will close the regular season at NCAA Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay on April 11.
