MTU Women’s Tennis Sweeps Purdue Northwest

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team shutout Purdue Northwest 7-0 Saturday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies are now 3-0 at home and have won two in a row going into the final GLIAC regular season match of the year on Sunday.

"This was a good win for us today and a solid start to the weekend," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "We had strong performances in both doubles and singles against a well-coached Purdue Northwest team. It was good to see Samantha Johnson play well in singles as she continues to bounce back from an injury earlier in the season. It was also awesome to see Bhavya Aggarwal get her first collegiate win in singles. She had a solid first set and then faced some adversity and made adjustments in the second set to win. We are excited to be back on the court tomorrow and hope to have a strong finish to the GLIAC schedule against Davenport."

Michigan Tech (6-2, 6-2 GLIAC) dominated Saturday's match with Purdue Northwest (2-8, 1-7 GLIAC), cruising to wins in all three doubles contests. Junior Ivona Gorgioski and sophomore Jessica Brown powered past Lena van Bergen and Patricia Dizon 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski shutout Olivia Kjaer and Julia Yanes-Barrera 6-0 in No. 2 doubles while sophomore's Mirna Golac and Samantha Johnson pulled away for a 6-2 win against Carolina Yepez and Anna Wachowski in No. 3 doubles.

The Huskies changed up the lineup a bit in singles and each player came away with a win Saturday. Bobik competed in the No. 1 spot and pulled away for a 6-1, 6-2 win against Lena van Bergen. Brown topped Yepez 6-0, 6-0 in No.2 singles followed by Opalewski with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Kjaer in No. 3 singles.

Freshman Neva Manas controlled her match against Dizon in the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-2 and Johnson collected a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 5 singles Saturday. Bhavya Aggarwal wrapped up the singles portion of the match with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph against Wachowski in the No. 6 spot in the lineup for her first collegiate win.

The Huskies will be back on the court Sunday when they host Davenport University in the final regular season GLIAC match. The first serve is slated for 10 a.m. eastern time.
