Huskies Fall 4-3 at Grand Valley State
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team suffered a tough 4-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at Grand Valley State University on Saturday. The Huskies battled back in singles after falling in doubles to start, but couldn't quite overtake the Lakers.
"It was a tough match for us today and one I felt like we should have won," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "The lost point in doubles was on me today. We have a good system for doubles, but we overemphasized that when we really needed to make some other adjustments. I thought we bounced back in singles and played well, but some of the matches just didn't go our way. We'll need to make some adjustments for tomorrow's match at Ferris State. They are a great team that is well coached and it's a tough place to play. We'll need it play better in order to have a chance to come away with a win."
Junior Ivona Gorgioski and sophomore Jessica Brown of Michigan Tech (4-2, 4-2 GLIAC) teamed up against Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva in No. 1 doubles on Saturday. They battled hard but ended up falling 7-5 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Freshmen Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski were edged by Taylor Barrett and Marija Leko in No. 2 doubles 6-4 while sophomore's Mirna Golac and Samantha Johnson were topped by Agata Szewczuk and Liv Hanover of Grand Valley State (6-0, 6-0 GLIAC) in No. 3 doubles 6-1.
The Huskies stormed back in singles by claiming wins in the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 spots in the lineup on Saturday. Bobik rallied from a tough set one loss to Leko in No. 3 singles to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Opalewski also persevered through three sets to top Hanover for another point. Opalewksi lost the first set 7-5 but turned the tables on her opponent with a 7-5 victory in the second followed by a 10-7 decision in third. Golac secured the other singles point for the Huskies on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-0 decision in her favor over Szewczuk in the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Combined with the doubles point, the Lakers were able to get singles wins from Griva in the No. 1 spot, Barrett in No. 2 singles, and Canellopoulos in No. 4 singles to pick up the win in the overall match.
The Huskies will look to regroup on Sunday when they travel to Ferris State for their second GLIAC match of the weekend. The first serve is slated for 10 a.m. eastern time.
