Tech Tennis Announces 2018-19 Postseason Team Awards
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's tennis programs along with Head Coach Kevin Kalinec recently announced the 2018-19 team awards. On the women's side, Ivona Gorgioski was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the second straight year while Mario Neto was named the MVP for the men's team for the third straight season.
Gorgioski, who hails from Royal Oak, Michigan, was a First Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at the conclusion of the fall season. She completed the 2018-19 campaign with an overall singles record of 12-4 and went 7-2 in conference contests. Gorgioski was equally impressive in doubles competition, boasting an overall record of 11-5 with an 8-1 mark in GLIAC battles.
Neto, who hails from Santos, Brazil anchored the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup and faced the opposing teams top player match in and match out. Neto has been a tremendous leader throughout his four-year career at Michigan Tech and helped lead the Huskies to three doubles wins in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Neto also excels in the classroom and has earned a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic Team in multiple seasons. Neto was an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection for three years in a row, leading Tech in doubles victories the past two years.
Vicky Quinde was the Most Improved Player for the Tech women's tennis team in 2018-19. Quinde, who hails from Cuenca, Ecuador, had a great senior season as evidenced by an overall record of 12-7 in singles competition. She compiled a 6-3 record in GLIAC matches to help guide the Huskies to the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament during the fall. In doubles matches, she combined for an 11-7 record in 2018-19. Quinde was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team in each of the last three seasons.
Nico Caviglia was named the Most Improved Player and Scholastic Achievement Award winner for the Tech men's team. Caviglia, a sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a Computer Engineering major and was second on the team in doubles wins this year. He had a key singles win in Tech's 6-1 victory over Shepherd University on March 13th.
Anabella Neri is this year's Scholastic Achievement Award recipient for the Tech's women's team. Neri, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, is a Biomedical Engineering major at Michigan Tech and was a GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree this year in addition to her team award. On the court, Neri won 11 singles matches and went 6-3 against GLIAC opponents in 2018-19. She wrapped up the year 5-4 in doubles contests for the Huskies.
The Huskies have now turned their attention to getting ready for the 2019-20 season which will open this coming fall.
