Huskies Drop 4-2 Decision at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team resumed the 2018-19 season on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-2 at NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in a non-conference match. The Huskies got off to a strong start in doubles, but the Phoenix regrouped in singles to take the two-point win.
Michigan Tech (9-5) earned wins in two of the three doubles contests Sunday to generate one of the points against UW-Green Bay (2-7). In No. 1 doubles, Ivona Gorgioski and Jessica Brown teamed up to face Kimberley Kaome and Thersa Tebon. Brown and Gorgioski cruised to a 6-1 victory to go to 11-4 in doubles this year.
Vicky Quinde and Samantha Johnson battled through to a 7-5 win over the duo of Tallie Piaskowski and Tiana Glazbrook in No. 2 doubles Sunday. The two sides traded point for point during the majority of the match, with Quinde and Johnson coming up with some big shots in the clutch to get the win. In No. 3 doubles, the Phoenix earned a 6-1 decision when Yasmin Glazbrook and Monika Gredzinski topped Allenca Rolim and Mirna Golac.
The majority of the singles matches were closely contested Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately UW-Green Bay earned points in four of the five with the No. 6 spot going in the books as unfinished. Gorgioski took Yasmin Glazbrook to three sets, but fell by the scores of 6-4, 2-6, and 6-10 in No. 1 singles. Gorgioski powered out of the gate quickly in set one before Glazbrook rallied to even the match in the second set. The two players exchanged points until the end of set three where Glazbrook was able to pull away.
Tiana Glazbrook got past Jessica Brown in No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1 and then in No. 3 singles Kimberley Kaome edged Johnson 6-3, 6-3. Quinde matched up with Piaskowski in No. 4 singles and rallied back from a 7-5 loss in set one to tie the contest with a 6-0 victory in set two. Unfortunately, Piaskowski bounced back with a 10-5 win in the third set to clinch the point.
Golac earned her eighth win of the year in singles with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win over Thersa Tebon in No. 5 spot in the lineup. Golac dropped in some impressive shots to keep Tebon out of striking distance to earn Tech's second point in the overall match. Anabella Neri and Monika Gredzinski were in a close match in No. 6 singles, but once the Phoenix clinched the fourth point, it went unfinished.
The Huskies will be back on the court next Sunday when they play Kutztown in a non-conference match at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. The first serve is slated for 8:30 a.m. eastern time.
