Huskies Fall to Indiana (PA) Sunday

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team fell to Indiana University of Pennsylvania 7-2 on day two of the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina Sunday morning. The Huskies opened their annual spring break trip on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Belmont Abbey.

"Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a great team," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "Being shorthanded, we had to play up a couple of spots and we competed hard in all of the matches. I'm happy with how well our players performed today and their effort on the court against the top ranked team in the Atlantic Region."

Michigan Tech (9-8) secured a point in No. 2 doubles on Sunday with Vicky Quinde and Anabella Neri outrunning Nicole Beidacki and Mariana Valenzuela of Indiana (PA) (5-1) by the final score of 8-4. Natalia Parra Alvarez and Sandra Cvetanovic were matched up against the top doubles team of Jarka Petercakova and Luise von Agris. Alvarez and Cvetanovic competed well, but fell 8-3.

Alvarez bounced back in singles competition with a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 spot over Julia Newman of IUP. The win produced the second point for the Huskies in Sunday's match and was the seventh singles win of the year overall for Alvarez. She is now 2-0 on the year in No. 4 singles.

Quinde, Neri, and Cvetanovic all played well in their singles contests, but unfortunately came up just a bit short. Neri fell in No. 3 singles to Nicole Beidacki in a close contest 7-5, 6-4 while Quinde was also on the heels of Luise von Agris in a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the No. 2 spot. Jarka Petercakova of IUP got past Cvetanovic 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. Due to injury, the Huskies were unable to compete in the No.5 and No. 6 singles spots along with the No. 3 doubles spot in the lineup.

The Huskies will return to the court on Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. against NCAA Division I George Mason University at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head.
