Huskies Come Up Short against Wayne State
MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team fell 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Friday night against Wayne State at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Huskies, who are the number six seed in the tournament picked up their point in number one doubles, but the Warriors were able to take the other two doubles points plus three singles points to clinch the match.
Freshman Ivona Gorgioski and junior Vicky Quinde put together a solid performance in number one doubles for Michigan Tech (7-6), defeating the tandem of Dasha Kuznetsova and Liz Ghellere 8-2. It was the seventh win for Gorgioski and Quinde in doubles matches this season, moving their record to 7-6 with four of the wins coming in the number one spot.
The other points in doubles went to Wayne State (9-2) in the number two and number three spots. Andreea Mitrache and Khadija Da-Silva topped Sandra Cvetanovic and Natalia Parra Alvarez 8-1 while Linda Liong and Irena van Meer teamed up to get past Anabella Neri and Allenca Rolim 8-1.
In tournament competition, the match is finalized immediately when a team reaches five points. The Warriors were able to record three points in singles courtesy of Andreea Mitrache with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Gorgioski in number one singles. Da-Silva locked down a 6-3, 6-0 decision against Cvetanovic in number three singles and Liong posted a 6-0, 6-0 result against Neri in number five singles.
The match was finished prior to the completion of number two, number four, and number six singles competitions.
The Huskies will be back on the court Saturday afternoon in the consolation bracket against seventh seeded Ferris State University. Tech defeated the Bulldogs in the first meeting of the season in Big Rapids 5-4. Saturday's first serve is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
