Huskies Open Weekend with 7-2 Loss at GVSU
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team opened the weekend with a 7-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at Grand Valley State University on Friday afternoon. The Huskies generated a point in both the doubles and singles portion of Friday's match.
Natalia Parra Alvarez and Sandra Cvetanovic were able to get Michigan Tech (3-5, 1-5 GLIAC) on the board with a point in doubles thanks to a solid 9-7 victory against Madison Ballard and Nicole Heniniger. It was just the second time this season that Alvarez and Cvetanovic were teamed up together in a doubles contest, but they played well to get the win and go to 1-1 as a duo.
Unfortunately, Grand Valley State (4-0, 4-0 GLIAC) would secure the other two doubles points and a 2-1 lead going into singles play. Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeny teamed up for an 8-3 win in the No.1 spot with Abby Perkins and Livia Christman combining for a point in No.3 doubles.
In singles, Michigan Tech freshman Ivona Gorgioski picked up her seventh win of the season and second in the No.1 spot in the lineup on the strength of a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Ballard. Gorgioski started the year at No.2 position in the lineup, but has played in the top spot in each of the last three contests.
Vicky Quinde gave Aimee Moccia all she could handle in No. 3 singles, but fell 6-4, 7-5. Alvarez battled back after a loss in the first set to Heniniger with a 6-3 victory in set two to force a third set. Heniniger ended up prevailing however 6-3 to garner the point.
The Huskies will be back on the court Saturday morning when they travel to Ferris State for another GLIAC match. The first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
