Huskies Get First GLIAC Win at Ashland
ASHLAND, Ohio – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team won for the third consecutive time on Friday with an 8-1 win in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Ashland. The Huskies have claimed at least seven points in each of the first three matches.
"I thought we really came together as a team today and had an outstanding match," Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "We started off with some solid doubles play and overcame a slower start in single competition to generate great results there too. We played the way we needed to in order to win and I'm very happy with our team's effort and start to the road trip."
Michigan Tech (3-0, 1-0 GLIAC) had a clean sweep in the doubles portion of the match with a convincing 8-2 decision by the duo of Anabella Neri and Allenca Rolim in the No. 3 spot in the lineup. They topped the team of Anna Hart and Allison Brooks to get the afternoon rolling.
Vicky Quinde and Ivona Gorgioski also secured an 8-2 win and in the process picked up the second point for the Huskies in the No.2 spot while Paola Quintana and Sandra Cvetanovic held off Brianna Brdicka and Sofie Garpered of Ashland 8-6 for the doubles sweep.
Tech carried a 3-0 lead into singles competition where Gorgioski improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brianna Brdicka in the No.2 position. Cvetanovic swept her singles set with final scores of 6-1, 6-1 against Camille Ringot. It was the fifth point for the Huskies which sealed the final outcome of the match.
Tech still went on to get three of the last four points up for grabs leading to the final tally of 8-1. Paola Quintana defeated Sofie Garpered in No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-4, Vicky Quinde got past Hazuki Ogino 6-7, 6-1, 10-5, and Anabella Neri defeated Anna Hart 6-3, 7-5.
The Huskies will be back on the court Saturday morning against Tiffin University in another GLIAC showdown. The first serve is slated for 10 a.m.
