Tennis Falls to Tiffin 5-4

MIDLAND, Mich. — Michigan Tech was edged 5-4 by Tiffin in GLIAC women's tennis today at Midland Community Tennis Center. Doubles proved to be the difference today as the teams each won three singles matches. The Dragons won two of the three doubles flights to improve to 11-4 overall and 8-4 in the GLIAC. The Huskies are now 3-8 overall (3-8 GLIAC).

With the loss, Tech's hopes of earning a berth into the GLIAC Tournament have ended. The Huskies needed a win today as well as a victory in tomorrow's match vs. Findlay to clinch the eighth seed in the tournament.

The No. 1 doubles flight went to the Huskies' duo of Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic by an 8-6 score. Tiffin won the other two. Emilia and Erika Tenizbaeva were defeated with an 8-6 tally by Caroline Nelhage and Chelsea Beck at No. 2. TU won No. 3 by an 8-0 decision.

Suthijindawong continued her dominance in singles with a 6-2, 7-6 triumph over Nelhage, who was an ITA Regional semifinalist. The Huskies' No. 1 is now 35-0 in her GLIAC singles career including an 11-0 mark this season.

Other Tech wins in singles came from Cvetanovic at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4) and Erika Tenizbaeva at No. 5 (6-3, 6-7, 12-10). TU won the other three flights in straight sets.

"It was a good match," said coach Kevin Kalinec. "We came up short, but I was happy to see Kwang keep her streak alive against a very good player in Nelhage."

Michigan Tech will wrap up its 2014 fall season with a noon first serve against Findlay tomorrow in Midland.
