HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech soccer ventures for its first road weekend of conference play, traveling to Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 3 p.m. before a Sunday tilt against Ferris State at 1 p.m. 

About the Cardinals

Saginaw Valley State enters the second week of conference play with a ledger of 3-2-1 and 0-1-1 within the loop. The Cardinals opened GLIAC play with a 1-0 loss to Davenport on Friday (Sep. 15) before drawing 1-1 with Grand Valley State on Sunday (Sep. 17).

Sarah Fredrick scored the lone goal from last weekend off an assist by Stephanie Strong.

Strong leads the team offensively, netting three goals paired with four assists on the season. Additionally, Madi Bajis has also scored three goals for the Cardinals this year.

SVSU has relied on two goalies this season, with Lainey Harbaz being the primary goalkeeper, with a record of 1-2-1. Harbaz earned a shutout in the season opener against Truman.

Head coach Tyler Channell enters his first year at the helm of the Cardinals. The Preseason Coaches' Poll saw Saginaw Valley State finishing fourth in the conference.

About the Bulldogs

Ferris State has been winless since its opening weekend, where they went 2-0. Since then, FSU has played to a 2-2-2 record. Most recently, the Bulldogs dropped a road contest to Grand Valley State 2-1 on Friday (Sep. 15) before drawing 1-1 at Davenport on Sunday (Sep. 17).

The Bulldogs have scored seven times this season, being led by Haley Buckman with two goals.

Defensively, goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei has played in five games this season, making 21 saves for a save percentage of .778 while having a 1.20 goals against average.

Earlier in the season, Bella Vallone earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following a 2-0 weekend over Northwood and Maryville.

Head coach Greg Henson is in his fifth year at the helm of the Bulldogs. In the Preseason Coaches' Poll, Ferris State was tabbed to finish second.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech impressed to open the conference portion of its schedule, being the lone team in the GLIAC to sweep the weekend. The Huskies showcased two shutouts with a 2-0 victory over Purdue Northwest on Friday (Sep. 15) before closing the weekend in 1-0 fashion against Parkside on Sunday (Sep. 17).

Michigan scored in each half of Friday's win, with Grace Hoeppner netting her first career goal and earning the game-winner. In the second half, senior defender Cassie Bonifas scored her second goal of the season off a penalty kick.

Goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde made three saves in just over 75 minutes of play before sophomore Brianna Barrows closed out the contest with one save. 

The Huskies held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks and poured on 17 shots, compared to the Prides' six shots.

Junior midfielder Seulgi Lee netted her fourth goal of the season, resulting in the game-winner and seeing the Seoul, South Korea, native earn GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

VanLangevelde earned the shutout with two saves on the day to put the Huskies on a three game win-streak.

Michigan Tech displayed dominance in the win, outshooting the Rangers 12-5 while earning seven corner kicks and holding Parkside to none.

One Last Thing

The Huskies have found a lot of success stemming from corner kicks this season and are currently ranked 12th in the nation, along with first in the conference, averaging 7.5 corner kicks per game.
