Huskies fall 2-1 to NMU in GLIAC Quarterfinals

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team fell 2-1 to Northern Michigan in the GLIAC quarterfinals on Tuesday (Nov. 9). The Huskies fell to a 12-7 record for the season.

"Our team gave everything that they had and they played their hearts out. We just fell a little short," Coach Turk Ozturk said. "We are disappointed, but we will see if there is even a shot to get in the NCAA tournament."

The Wildcats (11-7-1) struck early in the 7th minute when Isabela Cardoso scored her ninth goal of the season on an assist from Ashley Koch.

The Huskies had a pair of good chances in the 29th and 30th minutes. Grace Shaw would get her head on the ball, but it sailed high. She would find the ball again shortly after on a corner kick, but Wildcat goalkeeper Shenae Kreps made a nice play on the ball for the save.

The Huskies would find the back of the net in the 31st minute when Julia Pietila scored her seventh goal this season. After a nice cutback from Grace Shaw, she found Hannah Loughlin who passed it along to Pietila. She would stretch out to get the ball past the goalkeeper for the equalizer.

A few diving saves throughout the first half from goalkeeper Erika Gabriel helped keep it even at the break.

Northern would get the game-winner in the 57th minute. Justina L'Esperance would score her seventh of the season with the assist coming from Isabelle Brusilow.

The Wildcats out shot the Black and Gold 15-10 for the game. NMU also managed a three shot edge in shots on goal (7-4). Brooke Schauer was the lone Husky to get multiple shots on goal.

Northern Michigan advances to take on the #1 seed Grand Valley State. Saginaw Valley State (#3) will take on Ferris State (#2) in the other semifinal matchup.
