Huskies fall 2-0 at NMU in regular season finale

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest at Northern Michigan on Sunday (Nov. 7) in the regular season finale. The Huskies finish the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and 9-5 mark in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech finished fourth in the conference and will rematch with NMU in the GLIAC quarterfinal on Tuesday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m. from Kearly Stadium.  

The Huskies and Wildcats exchanged offensive opportunities in the first half, with each team producing four total shots and three shots on goal. Erika Gabriel came up with a big save in the 35th minute to keep it scoreless at the break. 

The Wildcats would strike twice in half number two. The first goal came in the 74th minute. After NMU got out on an offensive run, Calihan Bearden found the rebound and fired a shot into the back of the net for her first tally this season. 

NMU would score again in the 81st minute when a lead pass from Gwen Kiilunen found her teammate Ashley Koch, who chipped it over the goalkeeper for the score.

"Our team played their hearts out today and fell just a little short," Coach Turk Ozturk said. "We have to be able to recover quickly and shift our focus to Tuesday. We still have so much to play for we will be prepared to host the quarterfinals on Tuesday."

The Wildcats outshot the Huskies 14-7 in the game and also held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Seven different Huskies managed a shot on goal in the game. 

The Huskies have secured the #4 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will get right back at it against the #5 seed Wildcats on Tuesday in Houghton.
