Huskies edge Cardinals 2-0 on Sunday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team got a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 31). The Huskies improved to 11-5 overall on the season with an 8-4 mark in GLIAC competition.

"It was a great win and to do it on senior day today was extra special," Coach Turk Ozturk said. "I am incredibly proud of our team and to see how we come out in these big games and grind them out is special."

The Black and Gold got on the board in the 14th minute, when a corner kick from Stephanie Yeager would take one bounce in front of the goal and sneak in short side for the goal. It was Yeager's fourth goal of the season.

The Huskies other co-captain, Grace Shaw, would record the game's other tally in the 77th minute. On a corner kick pass from Yeager, Shaw would find the ball and get the header to go into the back of the net. It was Shaw's 10th goal this season.

"Our captains are locked in and they carry that motivation to the rest of the team," Ozturk said. "Big time players deliver in big time games and they want that pressure and that moment."

The Huskies played an all-around game on Sunday. They outshot the Cardinals 10-9 for the game, but held SVSU without a shot on goal for the contest. It was the Huskies 10th shutout this season.

"We are very confident in our defense that we can slow down some of these top offenses," Ozturk said.

Erika Gabriel posted her 5th shutout this season for the Huskies and improved her GLIAC-leading goals-against average mark to 0.26

The Huskies will wrap up the regular season with games next week at Purdue Northwest on Friday (Nov. 5) and Northern Michigan on Sunday (Nov. 7). The Pride are 0-14 in the GLIAC this season and lost in Houghton to Tech 3-0 on Oct. 1. The Wildcats are 7-5-1 in the GLIAC this season. Michigan Tech defeated the Wildcats 2-0 on Oct. 3.
