Soccer Takes Down Parkside 2-1 on Sunday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team bested the visiting Parkside Rangers 2-1 on Sunday (Oct. 10). Grace Shaw tallied each goal for the Black and Gold. All three of the game's goals came within a four minute stretch in the first half.

Michigan Tech would strike first in the 15th minute. After nice ball movement by the Huskies, Alicia Shatrau utilized her speed to get down the sideline and center a kick that found her teammate Grace Shaw. She was able to find the back of the net to get the home team on the board.

"I was able to get around after Jesse (Jacobusse) popped off a bit. I saw the cross in and Grace was able to finish it," Shatrau said.

"Our best soccer is when we have fluid movement and we find the open feet," Shaw said." Alicia's speed is amazing and I know when she has the ball we are going to be up at their end of the field."

Parkside would answer in the 18th minute, when Alexis Bolger got one in the back of the net after a couple of bounces on a corner kick.

Michigan Tech would immediately respond in the 19th minute when co-captain Grace Shaw came up with a loose ball, weaved her way through the Ranger defenders, and scored.

The 2-1 lead for Michigan Tech would hold for the game as neither team was able to score in the second half.

"It was a fight for the full 90 minutes and it shows how tough our conference is," Coach Ozturk said. "The ball movement is great to see and that's what we want. Grace Shaw stepped up big time. She was very composed and could have even scored more after some unlucky bounces."

The Huskies out shot the Rangers 18-9 in the contest. The Black and Gold also held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.

Michigan Tech will hit the road next weekend with trips to Northwood (7-3, 3-3) on Friday and Davenport (2-9-1, 2-5-1) on Sunday.
