Michigan Tech ties No. 1 Grand Valley State 2-2

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Trying to hand No. 1 ranked Grand Valley State their first home loss since 2016, Michigan Tech scored twice and went home with a 2-2 overtime tie Sunday at GVSU Soccer Field.

Tech goalkeeper Amanda Young played a strong first half and secured five saves on seven shots. Jesse Jacobusse scored to give Michigan Tech a 1-0 lead going into halftime and Grace Shaw tied the game 2-2 in the 88th minute to send the game to an extra session.

"For our student athletes to get a win on Friday and then recover and execute our game plan today against a great team was a tremendous effort," said head coach Turk Ozturk. "We switched our formation four times during the game so for our student-athletes to make those adjustments and buy in and believe, it showed the kind of character that this team has. I think this is just the start for us and we are trying to build a foundation for more good things to come."

The Huskies (1-0-1) have a week off before traveling to Marquette to play Northern Michigan next Sunday at 4 p.m. The Lakers (1-0-1) scored both goals in the second half and plays at Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Young was busy in the first half and made two great saves in the same sequence to hold Grand Valley State off the scoreboard. The Huskies capitalized on their only shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes. Grace Shaw passed the ball up the left side to open field and Jacobusse scored off her left foot to the lower left side of the frame past outstretched GVSU goalkeeper Jessica Radice in the 20th minute. Morgan Krause hit the right post with under five minutes to play but the Huskies still entered the break ahead 1-0. Shot attempts favored Grand Valley State 12-1.

The Huskies held the back line for seven minutes in the second half before Caitie Baron crossed a ball to the far post. With two GVSU on the goal line, Kennedy Bearden touched it in to tie the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute.

The Lakers then took a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute. Sydney O'Donnell struck from the corner over Young's head on the goal line and Carranza was all alone on the far post for a tap in.

The Huskies struggled to advance the ball into the GVSU defensive zone in the final 10 minutes until Brooke Schauer floated a free kick into traffic at the top of the box and found Shaw's foot. Shaw found space in the lower right corner of the goal to force overtime two minutes later. Shot attempts favored the Lakers 20-3 after 90 minutes.

Cook headed a Grand Valley State corner wide to the left in the seventh minute of overtime. Then Young punched out a second Laker corner try on a ball curling to the goal line on the far side. After the switch of ends, Grand Valley State mounted multiple dangerous chances, including a play in which Darline Rademaker tried a low shot from 25 yards in the middle but missed wide left with under three minutes remaining. The Huskies held on the rest of the way to earn a road tie.

"We have a lot of respect for Grand Valley State so for us to come out and give a great program a run in overtime on their home field means a lot to us," Ozturk said. "Our players deserve all the credit in the world and I am excited to see what the future holds for Husky nation."

Five position players played the full 110 minutes for the Huskies.
