Bonifas and Sgambati Earn All-GLIAC Honors
HOUGHTON, Mich. – A pair of Michigan Tech soccer players received GLIAC postseason honors on Thursday. Freshman defender Cassie Bonifas was named All-GLIAC Second Team and sophomore forward Gabby Sgambati was received All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honors.
A freshman from Pinckney, Michigan, Bonifas played in all 16 games in 2019 while making 13 starts in the defense. Bonifas was a member of a Huskies defense that produced five shutouts and ranked fifth in the GLIAC in Goals Against Average (1.64). Bonifas was a solid piece for the Huskies in defense and in the attack, as she scored the first point of her career on Oct. 15 when she assisted the tying goal against Saginaw Valley State. She also finished the year with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Sgambati, a sophomore from Farmington Hills, Michigan, played in all 16 games and ended the year as the leading scorer for the Huskies with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Sgambati's five goals tied her with Alyssa Hynnek in 2011 for the seventh-most in a single season by a Michigan Tech player. Sgambati scored goals against MSU-Moorhead, Minnesota Crookston, Ferris State, Northern Michigan, and Ashland, and she assisted on goals against Purdue Northwest and Parkside.
The Huskies finished the 2019 season with a 5-10-1 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the GLIAC. For the second year in a row, Michigan Tech was a recipient of a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for possessing a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year as the Huskies held a 3.42 team GPA.
