PREVIEW: Tech Ready for Clash with Northern Michigan

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team looks to wrap up its regular season with a GLIAC Tournament-clinching win at Northern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 8) at 2 p.m.

Coming off a pair of 1-0 road wins over Parkside and Purdue Northwest, the Huskies sit seventh in the GLIAC standings at 5-9-1 overall and 2-6 in the conference. Freshman Neve Badalow scored a great goal in the 14th minute of the team's win over Parkside, while sophomore Allison Thelen headed home the game-winner in the 44th minute against Purdue Northwest.

Sophomore Gabby Sgambati leads the team into Friday's contest as the top scorer for the Huskies with 12 points on five goals and two assists, while junior Grace Shaw has produced four goals and three assists for 11 points, and junior Jesse Jacobusse has put up nine points on three goals and three assists. Junior Amanda Young and freshman Gracie VanLangevelde both received starts in net during the previous set of games, with Young starting against Parkside and making five saves, and VanLangevelde posting seven saves against Purdue Northwest.

The Wildcats (4-12, 1-7 GLIAC) went 1-1 over the previous weekend with a 2-0 win at Purdue Northwest before a 1-0 defeat to Parkside. Northern Michigan defeated Michigan Tech 3-2 the last time these teams met on October 13 in a non-conference match, with Carolina Halonen, Gaelin Hirabayashi, and Isabelle Brusilow all scoring the goals for the Wildcats. Jamie Montgomery enters Friday's contest as the leading scorer for Northern Michigan with four goals, while Halonen has produced two goals and four assists for eight points this season. Brianna Frontuto will be the starter in goal for the Wildcats, as she leads the GLIAC with 99 saves and ranks 10th with a .728 save percentage.

"It's always tough to play them, whether we're home or away, and I think that mentally and physically we're up to the challenge," says head coach Michelle Jacob.
