Tech Nabs 1-0 GLIAC Win Over Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. – Freshman Neve Badalow scored an early goal for the Michigan Tech soccer team as the Huskies picked up a crucial 1-0 win over Parkside on a chilly Friday afternoon at Wood Road Field. The Huskies improve to 4-9-1 overall and 1-6 in the GLIAC with the victory and moved into seventh in the GLIAC standings.

"We did a great job to stay composed in our attack today," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "The team did a tremendous job of playing solid defense and working together to shut down the talents of Parkside."

The Huskies got on the board early in the first half thanks to Badalow's strike. Junior Jesse Jacobusse cut out a pass from the Parkside (5-10-1, 0-6-1 GLIAC) goalkeeper before attacking the Ranger defense. She found sophomore Gabby Sgambati waiting in the center of the Parkside third and, when double-teamed, picked out a running Badalow to her right. The freshman aimed and fired for the far top corner of the net and she was rewarded with her first Michigan Tech goal shortly after coming off the bench.

The Rangers took their first shot on goal of the game in the 34th minute on a dipping shot from outside the box that bounced before being smothered by junior Amanda Young. Young made another stop in the 42nd minute on a low and rolling effort from 30 yards out to bring the score to 1-0 in favor of the visitors at halftime.

The Huskies defensive effort continued into the second half as Parkside was consistently unable to get off quality shots. Young prevented a Parkside goal in the 47th minute and again in the 57th minute with a pair of saves. As time ticked down in the match, the Huskies withstood increased pressure from the Rangers. Parkside had one final shot on goal in the 89th minute but it was easily caught by Young.

Parkside took 18 shots to Michigan Tech's 12, and five of their shots were on target while Tech put six shots on frame. Both teams were level on fouls with eight apiece, while the Huskies earned the only two corner kicks of the afternoon.

Young earned the win with five saves on the day. Jacobusse and Sgambati were both credited with assists on Badalow's goal. Jacobusse also led the team with three total shots and two shots on goal. Freshman Cassie Bonifas picked up a yellow card in the 73rd minute following a harsh tackle.

Adrianna Bratel played 82:32 and made three saves on four shots faced for Parkside, while Izzy Guyer came in for the final 7:28 and saved the only shot on goal she saw. Jazmin Castanon led the Rangers with five total shots and three shots on goal.

Michigan Tech will close the weekend on Sunday (Nov. 3) as it travels to Indiana to take on Purdue Northwest at noon. The Pride (2-12-1, 0-7 GLIAC) suffered a 2-0 defeat to Northern Michigan on Friday, and were beaten 6-0 at Kearly Stadium the last time they faced the Huskies on September 27.
