Huskies Stumble in 2-1 Defeat Against Parkside

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech suffered a 2-1 defeat against Parkside Sunday afternoon from Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium after allowing two goals inside the first 25 minutes. The loss sends the Huskies to 3-2-1, and Parkside improves to 5-3-0 in the non-conference match.
Sophomore Grace Shaw pulled the Huskies to within one in the 59th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Hannah Loughlin sent a corner kick into the box from the right corner flag that was met by a rising Shaw, and the forward powerfully headed the ball into the back of the net.
The Huskies nearly took the lead within the first minute of the contest when Loughlin turned and fired a shot a few yards from goal that was denied by the Ranger keeper after receiving a throw in from sophomore Alicia Shatrau. The Huskies continued to have excellent chances throughout the opening stages of the game, with shots coming from sophomore Gabby Sgambati that were continuously turned away by the opposing goalkeeper.
The Rangers almost scored the opener in the 7th minute when junior Amanda Young was caught off her line and nearly beaten from distance after the ball fell to a Parkside player, but junior Kassity Swanson sprinted across the field and made a sliding goal-line clearance to prevent the goal.
Unfortunately, the Rangers would strike first a minute later when Delaney Benich received a long cross that once again made its way through the Husky defense, and she finished with a lofted shot over a diving Young and into the net. Benich made it two in the first half when she scored after receiving a flicked pass from Alexis Baker and finishing over Swanson and into the net in the 21st minute.
Sophomore Stephanie Yeager came close to scoring in the 26th minute. Junior Brooke Schauer lobbed a cross into the box that was headed poorly by a Parkside defender. Yeager wrapped her foot around the ball on a volley that was heading for the back of the net before the goalkeeper smothered the ball for a save.
Shaw nearly found Emily Zeitunian for the equalizer late in the half after she received a pass into space from sophomore Alexis Shatrau, but Shaw's cross was just behind Zeitunian and the ball eventually went out for a goal kick. Young was called into action in the 79th minute when Benich snapped off a low shot that Young was able to deny. Schauer had an opportunity on goal for the equalizer in the 84th minute, but her shot curved just wide of the net.
Michigan Tech took 25 shots to Parkside's nine, and finished with 12 shots on goal while four of Parkside's shots were on target. Michigan Tech also won the corner kick battle with seven to Parkside's two. Parkside did draw 16 fouls from the Huskies, while Tech managed to draw 12 fouls against the Rangers.
Young made two saves on the day, while Adrianna Bratel stopped 11 shots. Loughlin and sophomore Tate Robison both received yellow cards for Michigan Tech, and Viktoria Silva was given a yellow for the Rangers.
"I think we played a good game, but we didn't finish our chances, and that's what it came down to today," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "Our composure in front of goal was not the best today."
Tech will hit the road for its next pair of games, starting off with a meeting against Northwood (4-2-0) on Friday (Oct. 4) at 4 p.m., followed by a tough match against No. 11 Ferris State (6-1-1) at noon on Sunday (Oct. 6).
