Huskies Win Fourth Straight at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Michigan Tech soccer team swept two more weekend matches and extended the winning streak to four overall, thanks to a 2-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Ashland Sunday. The Huskies logged both of their goals in the second half after holding off 22^nd ranked Saginaw Valley State 3-2 to open the weekend Friday.

"It was another incredible team effort today against Ashland," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We were able to make good use of our opportunities and bring a big victory home. It was another tremendous performance by our defense and Amanda [Young] to secure the shutout. Front to back we played strong and our substitute players also came in and made a very positive difference for us."

Shots for the offenses were limited on both sides in Sunday's match, but Michigan Tech (9-5-1, 4-4-0 GLIAC) sophomore goalie Amanda Young was tested early by Ashland (9-3-4, 4-2-2 GLIAC). The Eagles' Makenzie Kelly unloaded shots in Young's direction in both the 13^th and 15^th minutes, with both being turned away from the net to keep the score 0-0. Young then added her third save to the stat sheet in the 26^th minute on a strike by Bella Petrock, giving the Huskies offense time to get rolling.

Tech pressed the attacked in the later moments of the half as freshman Hannah Loughlin generated the Huskies first shot in the 33^rd minute which went just wide of the net. Loughlin followed it up a few minutes later by challenging Ashland goalie Ellie Bower for the first time with a shot on goal. Loughlin tacked on her third attempt of the half with a blast that went just high in the 40^th minute while senior Marisa DeMario logged an attempt at the net right before the break.

With the game still scoreless to start the second half, Young stepped up again with another save on a shot by Juliana Markovic in the 59^th minute, which proved to be huge. The Huskies didn't have another scoring opportunity until the 70^th minute, but they made it count. Sophomore Leah Goldman recorded her first goal of the season and what would be her second career game winning goal to put Tech in front 1-0. Goldman was able to chip the shot over Bower on the edge of the box, and was assisted on the play by sophomore Kassity Swanson.

Young came up with another big save on a shot by Abby Siefert in the 82^nd minute and then Tech put the match out of reach with time winding down. Sophomore Jesse Jacobusse delivered her sixth goal of 2018 in the 88^th minute to make it a 2-0 score.

Jacobusse was able to beat the keeper after a misplay by the Ashland defense. Freshman Alicia Shatrau pushed the ball towards Jacobusse to setup the strike and in the process earned her third assist of the year. Tech's defense then kept the Eagles away from the net to secure the shutout.

Loughlin led the Huskies' offense with three shots followed by Jacobusse with two and the second goal of the afternoon. Goldman had the game winning goal on her only attempt of the match with Swanson and Shatrau picking up assists.

The Huskies had a slight edge in total shots at 8-7 while Ashland held the advantage in corner kicks 2-1. Young played all 90 minutes in front of the net for Tech and picked up the win on the strength of five saves. It was also her fourth full shutout to go along with three shared shutouts this season.

Kelly paced the Eagles' offense with two shots on goal and Bowers played all 90 minutes for Ashland in front of the net. Bowers had one save in her first loss of the year.

The Huskies return to Sherman Field on Friday for a GLIAC match against rival Northern Michigan on Senior Day. Tech has clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament and is still in the hunt to potentially host a first round game. The kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
