Huskies Shutout Purdue Northwest 3-0 Friday Night

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team recorded a pair of early goals and never looked back on the way to a key 3-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Friday night over Purdue Northwest at Sherman Field. The Huskies also pitched their fifth shutout of the season in what was an outstanding overall performance.

"I'm very proud of our team and the great effort that they gave tonight," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We talked in our pregame meeting about how we need to come out at the top of our game and put on a great performance. I thought we had an outstanding first half to set the momentum on the two quick goals by Jesse [Jacobusse]. I give a lot of credit to Purdue Northwest, their players worked hard and never gave up and made us have to work for everything. I applaud them for their efforts and I'm very happy with our team for their performance."

Michigan Tech (6-5-1, 1-4-0 GLIAC) went right to work on offense and in the seventh minute goal number one of the night was on the board. The Huskies generated a corner kick by pressing the attack and sophomore Brooke Schauer was called upon to deliver the ball from the right corner. Schauer dropped the ball into the box for sophomore Jesse Jacobusse who placed a header shot into the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 Tech lead. It was Jacobusse's third goal of the year and Schauer's second assist.

Jacobusse found the back of the net again in the 13th minute to extend the Huskies' lead to 2-0 on her second goal of the match. Schauer came up with a steal on defense and sent the ball to freshman Grace Shaw down the right sideline. Shaw moved up the field a few yards and crossed the ball to Jacobusse, who was positioned at the top of the box on the left. Jacobusse slipped the shot past the keeper who had come out to challenge. In the process, Shaw added her fifth assist of the season to the stat sheet.

Meanwhile, the Tech defense limited Purdue Northwest (3-11-0, 1-6-0 GLIAC) to just one shot in the first half that sailed wide right in the fifth minute. The Huskies nearly added a third goal in the opening period themselves when freshman Gabby Sgambati had a blast bounce off the right post in the 40th minute.

The Huskies carried their 2-0 lead into the break and in the 56th minute freshman goalkeeper Erika Gabriel kept it intact with a save. Gabriel made another stop in the 61st minute and then Shaw weaved her way through the Pride's defense for a key insurance goal for Tech.

Shaw started from the right side and worked her way with the dribble into the middle of the box about 15 yards away from the net. She then fired the ball into the left corner for her team leading seventh goal of the season and a 3-0 Huskies lead. The Huskies' defense took it from there and kept the Pride off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Jacobusse and Shaw each had a team high four shots for the Huskies to guide the offense Friday night. It was the first career multi goal performance for Jacobusse and in addition, the first goal counted as her second game winning score of the season. She is now second on the team in scoring in 2018 with four goals. Shaw recorded her seventh goal and fifth assist and in the process added three more points to her season total which stands at 19.

As a team, Tech outshot Purdue Northwest 22-6 and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Amanda Young started in goal and played the first 45 minutes to record her sixth win of the year. Gabriel took over in the second half and logged four saves to help preserve the shutout.

Shelby Ross and Sydney Hanson attempted a pair of shots apiece for the Pride Friday night. Kelley Sharp allowed two goals with a pair of saves in the first half while Halley Stork gave up the third goal in the second half. Stork chalked up six saves and with an additional team save, the Pride had nine total stops in the match.

The Huskies will look to keep the momentum going Sunday afternoon when they host UW-Parkside for another GLIAC contest at Sherman Field. The kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
