Huskies Tripped Up by Northwood

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team came up empty against Northwood University Sunday afternoon at Sherman Field, falling in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match 2-1. The Huskies rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game early in the second half, but the Timberwolves came back with the decisive kick in the 66th minute.

"Northwood played a good game against us and unfortunately I don't think we had our best game today," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We made some costly mistakes and didn't do the simple things well enough to win. We have to wash today away as there is no sense in dwelling on it. We have to bounce back and focus on doing what we do well as we get ready for Northern Michigan next Sunday. We also have to show up and play a complete game from the first whistle to the last."

Michigan Tech (4-3-1, 0-2-0 GLIAC) went on the attack early and generated three corner kicks and a pair of shots in the first nine minutes of the contest. Senior Marisa DeMario just missed on a pair of shot attempts that veered wide of the net in the fifth and ninth minutes.

Northwood (2-5-0, 1-1-0 GLIAC) then took its turn attacking the Huskies' defense. After three shots on goal were saved by sophomore goalie Amanda Young, the fourth found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Young leaped in the air to deny a blast by Ashton Brooks, but the rebound was picked up by Karina Parker and sent back towards the net and in for the goal. Brooks was credited with the assist as the Timberwolves grabbed a 1-0 edge.

The Huskies kept the ball in the attacking third for the majority of the half, but were unable to capitalize to knot the score. Freshman Gabby Sgambati, freshman Grace Shaw, sophomore Brooke Schauer, and DeMario combined for five shots on goal, but goalie Bridget Adams made the stop each time. Late in the half, Michigan Tech appeared to have possibly tied the game, but the goal was waived off, leaving the 1-0 deficit intact.

The Huskies persistence on offense finally paid off early in the second half when they generated another corner kick in the 52nd minute. Schauer lofted the ball perfectly into the center of the box where Shaw was waiting to take a shot. Shaw slipped the ball past Adams for her fifth goal of the season to tie up the contest at 1-1. Schauer picked up her first assist of the 2018 campaign.

However, Adams made four more saves and the Northwood defense was credited with a stop to keep it 1-1 contest until the 66th minute when the Timberwolves would pull back in front. The Huskies had a costly turnover just outside the box on the left side of the field. Brooks picked up the loose ball and angled it on a shot into the upper right corner of the net to make it a 2-1 score.

The Huskies nearly tied the match again in the 71st minute on a strike by senior Rachel Wall that was redirected away from the net by Adams. Schauer had another look at the net as the ball curled just to the right of the post in the 87th minute. Freshman Stephanie Yeager challenged Adams again in the 88th minute, but Adams was there again to make the save for the Timberwolves and preserve the 2-1 score.

Shaw powered the Tech offense with a match high six shots, with one finding the back of the net for her team leading fifth goal of the season. Shower took three shots and had the assist on Shaw's successful attempt. As a team, the Huskies outshot Northwood 26-8 while taking 14 corner kicks without surrendering one to the Timberwolves. Young played all 90 minutes in front of the net and made four saves.

Brooks led the Timberwolves with four shots, including a goal and one assist. Parker had only one shot opportunity but made the most of it for the first goal of the match. Adams logged all 90 minutes in front of the net, making 13 saves on her way to her second win of the season.

The Huskies will look to regroup on Sunday when they travel to Northern Michigan for a non-conference match against the Wildcats. The kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
