Huskies and St. Cloud State Battle to 2-2 Double OT Draw

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2018 season on Saturday with a 2-2 double overtime draw to St. Cloud State University at Sherman Field. The Huskies rallied from a 2-0 deficit on two unanswered goals in the second half to force overtime.

"I'm definitely proud of our players for battling back from the 2-0 deficit," Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We didn't have a strong start to the game so that put us back on our heels a little bit early on. We had to fight hard to get back into this and the reward was getting to play overtime. We created a couple of good opportunities in overtime and came close to scoring, but unfortunately the shots didn't go in.

"Overall, we should be really proud of the way we played this weekend, winning our first game on Thursday and then getting the tie today. We still have some growth and learning to do, but I'm proud of our effort against two really good teams this weekend."

It took a little time for the offensive attacks for both sides to get into rhythm, with the first shot coming in the 16th minute. Michigan Tech (1-0-1) Senior Marisa DeMario had an attempt blocked on an attack followed a couple of minutes later by an attempt from freshman Alexis Shatrau that needed to be saved by goalie Zoe Welsh.

Sophomore Mackenzie Scholz nearly gave the Huskies a first half lead when she challenged Welsh in both the 27th and 37th minutes, forcing two more saves. Meanwhile, St. Cloud State (0-1-1) managed just two shots against Tech's defense in the opening 45 minutes, neither of which needed to be saved.

St. Cloud State turned up the pressure in the second half and broke through for the first two goals of the match. Maria Kass produced both scores, starting in the 53rd minute off an assist from Kelli Santo Paulo. About five minutes later, Kass struck again when goalie Zoe Welsh found her in stride with a pass through the defense which setup a lane to the goal.

Trailing 2-0, Michigan Tech answered quickly to take some of the momentum and get back into the match. Freshman Gabby Sgambati recorded her second goal in as many games with an unassisted blast in the 60th minute to make it 2-1.

The gap stayed at one until the 78th minute when the Huskies engineered a successful attack down the left side of the field. Freshman Hannah Loughlin elevated a perfect pass from the left side over the defense to sophomore Jesse Jacobusse, who lifted the ball over the goalie and into the back of the net for the 2-2 tie.

In the first overtime frame, Yeager forced Welsh to make a save and then two more deflections by Welsh in the second overtime kept the Huskies off the board. Meanwhile, sophomore goalie Amanda Young picked up a save in the first overtime to help preserve Saturday's tie.

Sophomore Brooke Schauer had a team high three shots followed by five other Huskies with two shots each. Sgambati got her second goal of the year with Jacobusse picking up her first of the 2018 campaign to account for the scoring. The Huskies outshot St. Cloud State 16-14 while Young was credited with six saves in 110:00 minutes of work in front of the net.

Kass had a team high four shots and both goals for St. Cloud State on Saturday. Welsh played all 110:00 minutes and picked up eight saves in the match.

The Huskies return to action on Friday when they travel to Bemidji State for a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
