Huskies Play to a 1-1 Draw at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team battled Northwood University to a 1-1 draw on the road Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The Huskies fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but came back to tie the game in the 69^th minute to force overtime.

"It was great to see the players fight back from the 1-0 deficit at half," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We played much better soccer in the second half and did an excellent job of creating shot opportunities. Unfortunately, we only finished one of them."

Michigan Tech (4-5-1, 1-2-1 GLIAC) went on the attack early in Sunday's match with senior Taylor Archibald getting the first shot on goal of the contest. Northwood (3-6-1, 1-2-1 GLIAC) goalie Kylie Steingreaber made the first of her nine saves on the blast in the seventh minute. Freshman Brooke Schauer got her first opportunity at the net just over a minute later, with another save being made by Steingreaber to keep things scoreless.

Although the total scoring opportunities for the Timberwolves were limited, Northwood managed to pull in front with the first goal of the contest in the 25^th minute. Ashton Brooks took a pass from the right side and slipped the shot just inside the post for her sixth goal of the year. The assist was credited to Sadey Jumapao who played the ball forward into scoring position.

The Huskies stayed on the attack and nearly created the equalizer in the final moments of the first half. Freshman Leah Goldman made a bid for the net in the 39^th minute, which was turned away by Steingreaber. Then in the 42^nd minute Archibald unloaded a strike towards the front of the net that was once again saved by Steingreaber.

Michigan Tech's persistence paid off in the 69^th minute when sophomore Katri Studtmann landed her second career goal and first of the season into the back of the net to tie the score 1-1. The goal came off a corner kick with Archibald delivering the ball to Studtmann for the assist. Studtmann used the inside of her foot to deflect the ball past the keeper thanks to the precision of Archibald's strike from the corner.

The match progressed forward from there with neither side able to break the tie in regulation. Steingreaber ended up making a pair of saves in the second half to keep the Huskies from adding any further goals. Meanwhile, senior goalie Kirsen Hudak kept the Timberwolves at bay with a save in the second period as well.

Junior Marisa DeMario and Goldman forced Steingreaber to make two saves in the first two minutes of overtime as the Huskies tried to end it quickly. Tech got two additional attempts away in the first overtime, but the score stayed tied at 1-1 with 100 minutes in the books.

In the second overtime frame, the Huskies' defense came up with a big team save on a shot by Isabel Hess in the 103^rd minute and then freshman Jesse Jacobusse almost gave Tech the decision if not for another save by Steingreaber. The Huskies had one more chance in the 109^th minute, but a shot by junior Andrea Zubke sailed just high of the crossbar for what would be the final scoring opportunity for either side on Sunday.

Studtmann guided the Huskies' offense with three shots and the goal followed by Archibald with three shots and the assist on the corner kick. Jacobusse, Zubke, Goldman, and Schauer each led the team in total shot attempts with four apiece. As a team, the Huskies outshot Northwood 27-7 while the Timberwolves held a slight edge in corner kicks 3-2.

Hudak played all 110 minutes in front of the net for Tech and made two saves with a third being credited to the team stats.

Brooks powered the Timberwolves with five shots and had their only goal of the match. Steingreaber logged all 110 minutes for Northwood in goal and finished the contest with nine saves.

The Huskies will wrap up their five match road stretch on Sunday when they travel to Marquette to play rival Northern Michigan. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
