Huskies Gearing Up for Big Weekend against Findlay and Ohio Dominican

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team will host a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches this Friday and Sunday at Sherman Field. The Huskies will welcome the University of Findlay on Friday night and Ohio Dominican University on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan Tech enters the weekend with an overall record of 5-2 and 1-1 in the GLIAC after splitting a pair of conference matches last weekend at Sherman Field. The Huskies edged Ferris State 1-0 Friday and held their own against defending national champion Grand Valley State in a 1-0 loss on Sunday which snapped a five match winning streak.

Senior forward Jaci Mielke powers the Tech offense with three goals, two assists, and eight points coming into the weekend. Senior midfielder Jessica Splittgerber has two goals, an assist, and five points while freshman Alex Vasile owns one goal in 2016. The Huskies are averaging a goal per game, but boast one of the top defenses in the GLIAC, holding opponents to 0.71 goals per game. Junior goalie Kirsen Hudak has permitted only five goals and stopped 36 shots by opponents. She also owns a 5-2 record and three shutouts through the first seven contest this season.

Findlay is 3-5 on the year and 1-1 in the GLIAC heading into the weekend. The Oilers split two GLIAC matches last weekend as well, defeating Saginaw Valley State 1-0 while falling to Northwood 2-0 at home. Findlay slipped past Cedarville University 2-1 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday.

Midfielder Sierra Peacock is the top scorer for Findlay, boasting four goals and eight points followed by forward Marissa Swindell with two goals, two assists, and six points. Goalie Sarah Baer has played the majority of the minutes in front of the net and has compiled an overall record of 3-4 with two shutouts. She has allowed 12 goals and made 23 saves.

Ohio Dominican is 2-3-3 overall going into the weekend and 1-0-1 in the GLIAC. The Panthers will battle Northern Michigan on the road Friday before arriving in Houghton on Sunday. ODU notched a 2-1 win over Northwood to kick off the GLIAC schedule last Friday and played Saginaw Valley State to a 1-1 draw last Sunday.

Forward Alli Pavlik has a team high three goals and six points while midfielder Allie Atkinson has generated two goals to go along with a team high four assists and eight points. Goalie Marissa Wierzbicki is 2-1-1 in net and has 13 saves. Goalie Kelsey Harris has logged the most minutes (413:37) and is 0-2-2 with 35 saves. The Panthers are averaging 2.25 goals per game and are allowing 1.14 opponent goals per match.

Friday night's match with Findlay will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night and Sunday's game with ODU is the "Let's Kick Cancer" game.

For the Let's Kick Cancer Game, the Huskies are partnering with the Women Living with Cancer Support Group, who provides support for cancer patients. Each player will have a warm up t-shirt that is available for bid online using the women's soccer Facebook page, with the minimum bid being $20. A check will be presented at halftime of Sunday's game with the proceeds from the bidding.

Donation boxes will be available at the ticket office inside the Michigan Tech SDC and also during the game on the October 2nd.

Friday night's match is slated for 7 p.m. and Sunday's contest is scheduled for noon.
