Soccer Tops SVSU in Battle of GLIAC Contenders

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Michigan Tech soccer picked up an important win at Saginaw Valley State 2-0 this afternoon at Braddock Field on SVSU's campus. Not only did the Huskies move ahead of the Cardinals in the GLIAC standings, they earned a win against an SVSU team that sat ahead of them in the latest NCAA Midwest Region Rankings.

Tech broke up a scoreless game early in the second half and added a second goal in the 66th minute to earn their 10th win of the season.

"We came out strong and got better as the game went on," said Tech coach Michelle Jacob. "We really controlled play in the second half."

Both Tech goals were scored off of headers on set pieces. The first was Annie Dahlquist's in the 48th minute off a corner kick from Lexi Herrewig.

The Huskies added to their lead 18 minutes later as Madeline Faust headed in a free kick from Janelle Riedl.

Tech had a 14-6 lead in shots. Goalkeeper Jenna Phelps made three saves for the Huskies to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

Cardinals' goalie Claire Spleth saved six of the Huskies' eight shots on goal.

The win gave Tech a 10-2-2 overall record and 8-1-2 mark in GLIAC games. The Cardinals are now 9-2-3 overall and 7-2-2 in the league.

The Huskies, who have assured themselves a home GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game next week, will wrap up the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 1) at Northwood.
