HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech got a late goal from Lexi Herrewig to defeat Findlay 1-0 in GLIAC women's soccer at Sherman Field tonight in a driving rain. The Huskies (8-1-1, 6-0-1 GLIAC) kept their unbeaten streak alive; it now sits at nine matches.

Tech's offense went with the wind in the opening half and produced numerous chances. Haley Crites was in alone on the goalkeeper in the second minute, but her shot was saved by the Oilers' goalkeeper Samantha Trimboli.

Herrewig played the ball into space later in the half, but dribbled too far and Trimboli was able to make another save.

Findlay had perhaps its best chance in the 18th minute on a defensive miscue, but the shot was pushed wide.

Tech put five shots on goal in the opening half compared to two for the Oilers (6-5-1, 3-2-1 GLIAC).

Herrewig scored the game's only goal in the 82nd minute. She again played the ball into space, but this time was able to dribble around the keeper for a wide open net. The left-footed shot came from the edge of the six-yard box on the left side.

Findlay created a great opportunity in the waning moments of the game. A high shot from the right side was punched away by Tech goalkeeper Jenna Phelps to preserve the shutout and win.

"Both teams played a pretty good game despite the conditions," said coach Michelle Jacob. "The weather conditions were tough, and I thought we controlled the ball well. We played quality soccer and made runs instead of launching the ball when we had the wind.

"Lexi had a beautiful goal at the end to give us the win."

The Huskies finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots. The Black and Gold were able to only get one of their nine shots on goal past Trimboli. Phelps tallied five saves for the hosts to earn her third shutout of the season.

Michigan Tech will have a day off before returning to action at Sherman Field Sunday (Oct. 19). Kickoff is scheduled for noon against Tiffin.
