Soccer Falls in First NCAA Tournament Game

QUINCY, Ill. – In its first NCAA Tournament game, sixth seeded Michigan Tech fell 4-0 to the No. 3 seed UW-Parkside on Friday (Nov. 15) evening. Tech's season ends at 14-6-1 after the Rangers scored a pair of goals in each half.

"We're so proud of the team for accomplishing what they did this season," Tech soccer coach Michelle Jacob said. "We had an amazing run and are so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the NCAA tournament."

Emily Konior scored 15:03 into the game for an early Ranger lead. Kaela Hoecherl added to the lead nine minutes later.

Hoecherl buried six minutes into the second half for her second of the game and Stephanie Barsuli rounded out the scoring at 61:32.

"We didn't have the outcome tonight we were hoping for but got better and better as the game progressed," added Jacob. "I'm happy we ended the game giving our all to the very last minute."

Jenna Phelps and MaryBeth Spoehr split time between the pipes for Tech. Spoehr started the game and had four saves in the first half. Phelps played the second half.

Parkside held a slight 12-11 advantage in shots and both teams had two penalty kicks.

"I'm so proud of all our players, especially our seniors, who were able to end their career with a trip to the NCAA tournament," said Jacob. "To be able to get a bid within four years of starting the program is a testament to their hard work and belief in Michigan Tech. A special thanks to all those who have supported us along the way! You have all made a positive difference for us."
