Soccer Advances to GLIAC Semifinal With Last Second Goal

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Lindsey Van Rooy scored as time expired in the second overtime to lift Michigan Tech to a 1-0 win over Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC Quarterfinal on Tuesday (Nov. 5). The Huskies advance to the semifinal on Friday (Nov. 8) against Ashland on Grand Valley State's campus.

With the 10-second countdown rolling, Danna Kasom passed the ball up to the senior, playing in her final game at Sherman Field, who blasted a shot from 25 yards out over the Cardinal goalkeeper. Van Rooy's fifth of the season hit the back of the netting as the clocked ticked to zero.

"It's all a blur right now," Van Rooy said. "Danna kept that ball composed and got it up to me within five seconds. It just hit it and hoped it went in. I hit the ground and heard people scream. That was awesome. I had no clue where that clock was. I just hit it and hoped it was in time."

"That was a one of a kind goal," Tech soccer coach Michelle Jacob said. "I'm so impressed with our team that they never gave up and played to the last second. It just goes to show that every second of the game counts, and we made it count at the end."

The two teams battled to a draw for the first 1:09:59. The Huskies dominated the offense most of the day, generating 33 shots and 16 on goal.

"We did a great job to not panic," Jacob added. "We controlled the play so well and created good shots. It was a great effort by the team to not get deterred there."

Tech had numerous quality scoring chances and even found the back of the net late in the first half after Amanda Whiting put one past the SVSU goalkeeper. The goal was waved off on an offside call.

"We kept working hard knowing that it was going to come eventually," added Van Rooy. "To get that goal at the last second shows all the hard work. I'm excited to move on."

The Huskies also hit the crossbar twice and the goal post late in regulation.

Kailey Naumcheff stopped 15 Tech shots for the Cardinals. Jenna Phelps had three saves between the pipes for the Huskies.

"It's going to be against a good team whoever we play in the semifinal," said Jacob. "Going out and playing our kind of soccer, I know we can win games."

The Huskies improve to 13-4-1 on the season and the Cardinals end their season at 7-9-1.

Tech's next opponent Ashland defeated Northern Michigan 1-0 on Tuesday to advance. The Eagles defeated the Huskies 1-0 in the only meeting between the two teams on Oct. 18 in Ohio.
